This page uses the name old name, Advanced Roadmaps, instead of Plans.
From its origin as a server plugin, Advanced Roadmaps diverged into two distinct versions: the cloud version which became Plans as we know it today, and the server version which lives on as part of Jira Data Center.
The documentation underwent the same mitosis. What started as one documentation set became two, each reflecting the unique paths of the product. However, we also retained the original documentation because of its value to customers using older versions of Advanced Roadmaps.
This outdated documentation outranked our updated content in Google search results, confusing customers. And because of previous one-way decisions, we couldn’t update the old content without bringing the whole construct down.
Once the window for needing this old content passed, I proposed a solution that:
- illustrated how past decisions limited our ability to fix the documentation
- would enhance the user experience for customers while resolving our ongoing content management issues
- resolve future content management issues with these pages and
- articulated the size of the customer impact
As a result of this proposal, I convinced stakeholders to implement a solution that addresses the needs of the small (but devout) customer base that needed the old content while also improving the help-seeking experience for new users.
